Writing from students in Room 25 about their spectacular term so far at Garden to Table, including a wonderful narrative from the perspective of a caterpillar.

Lulu and Leo Voncutsy
It all started when me and my brother Leo were born. We climbed our way out of our eggs and noticed our mother wasn’t there. Where was she? We waited hours but she didn’t come. So we decided to walk along and make our way to a nice place to build our home. When we were walking, we saw some caterpillars, they were friendly caterpillars. I said “hey”, and walked off. It was about an hour afterwards that I noticed my brother wasn’t beside me. O no, I had lost my brother as well! What was I going to do? Not long after I realised there was nothing I could do so I started walking and walking, then to my astonishment, there was 15 green polls with lots of little boxes on them. Then I saw a human lean over with a leaf in their hand. I thought that it looked like fun so I jumped on and she carried me and put me in some kind of food station. I also heard her calling me Lulu. Once I was put down, I started to eat and eat and eat! And when I got full, I think I ate to much. A couple of days later they bought a new catepillar, as soon as I saw him I thought, I know him from somewhere. When he woke up and said “hey I’m Leo Voncustsy,” I then introduced myself as Lulu

The Giant Flat Shiny Thing
So there I was, sitting on a delicious leaf, munching along happily when a huge loud booming sound combined with a scream went off near me. Suddenly a giant, flat, shiny thing landed in front of me, so naturally I walked away, but then another one landed in front of me again. What was going on?! I turned around and suddenly I was surrounded by giant flat shiny things! But then as soon as they came, they left and in its place were my favourite type of leaf. Swan plants! I looked up down, up, down, up, down, up and then nodded, yes I like this leaf. But before I had time to hop on the leaf, it came charging towards me at high speed and the next thing I knew I was living on the leaf in an uncomfortable positions and everything was flying past me at the speed of light. And then, it stopped! The ground came into view and my fear of heights got the better of me. I rolled over so as not to see the ground but something pushed me back into place and man it burned. I didn’t know what was going on but I did know I wanted it to stop right now. They took me inside a dark room with lots of yummy leaves and next to me I saw another smaller one of my kind. Outside, I heard them talking about me and then I heard the word Max and realised that Max was my new name, although my original names was Cadoodeloodecatpop the third, from the Northern branches. And I must say I was quite offended at being renamed by people I didn’t know.

Garden to Table Bug Hotels
Group One was at the garden and we were going to make a bug hotel. I buddied up with Joshua and we chose a hotel room. We put some swan plant leaves and put them in. I looked for a caterpillar but we couldn’t find one so we tried getting an aphid. We named it Timmy but it died so we kept looking for a caterpillar and Egypt gave us one. Then we found a baby caterpillar the next day in the morning. We had a caterpillar egg on a swan plant leaf. We were so lucky I thought, but on Monday we had lost our caterpillars and the egg because of the storm.

Caterpillar Hunt
When I was looking for materials for the bug hotels I soon was almost going to step on a little caterpillar but I didn’t. When the bug hotel was finished I saw the most incredible thing. It was the caterpillar I almost stepped on but not only that it was straight after my group finished their bug hotel. But not only that, I was feeling a bond between us and at last I gave him the perfect name CUP CAT standing for Caterpillar Unbelievably Patiently Courageous Action Tamasa, and that’s why I called him (or her) CUP CAT.

Garden to Table; the bug hotel
Last Thursday at Garden to Table, Miles and I made a bug hotel. We didn’t have any caterpillars so I asked Egypt if we could have one of hers and she said yes. So then we had one. Then we found another so we had two. But on Monday 16th June one of the caterpillars fell out and died because of the storm. Then the caterpillar turned into a chrysalis, hopefully this one won’t fall out

About Garden to Table
In the garden: We identify bad predators and where they live. The predators bugs are; wasps, praying mantis, birds, spiders, lady bugs and the good bugs are millipedes, slugs, slaters, snails and worms. Our pollinator friends are bees and butterflies
In the kitchen: Hopefully the next thing we make is pizza with some vegetables on it and potato soup with muffins.

Soil Tests
Last week at Garden to Table, Jodie taught us the three elements which make up nutrients in the soil. We tested them to find, if each was doing its correct job. These nutrients are vital to plant growth and health.
The first of these elements is Nitrogen, which is shown as an N on the periodic table. Without nitrogen in the soil the leaves on our plants wouldn’t grow. That would mean they wouldn’t soak up enough sun to photosynthesis! Also lettuce and other leafy vegetables would be too small to eat. If there is no Nitrogen the plant will keep small as well as keeping the fruit small. Who wants to eat small fruit? I definitely don’t!
The next element I would like to talk about is Phosphorus, shown as a P on the periodic table. Phosphorus is extremely important for root growth. Short roots, short plant. This means that it cannot soak up enough water to grow.Also being that they cannot get other nutrients from the soil to help grow up strong, tall and healthy. It is the same again for roots. If they can’t soak up their food then the fruit will stay small as well as the plant.
The final element is Potassium shown as a K on the periodic table. Without it our plants would be unhealthy and our fruit too small. It is for plant health and fruit growth. If the plants are unhealthy they cannot produce seeds or more plants. Instead they die without other plants to replace them. If you think about it, seeds come from fruit mostly and that leads to our next thing. If the Potassium isn’t there then the fruit will be too small and inedible. Its seeds will only make small plants. Small fruit? Not for me!
I think these elements play an extremely important role. When we got our test results we found that the soil at Edendale was lacking Nitrogen and Phosphorus. Meanwhile the Potassium was at a perfect level. Garden to Table is a great program and I want to thank Jodie for teaching us this. These three elements are plant savers! By Josh R.25

Last week at Garden to Table, Jodie taught us about nutrients that are in our soil in the school garden. We learned the 3 main elements that plants need; they are NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium).
The first element is Nitrogen. Nitrogen is important for leaf growth. If the soil doesn’t have enough, leaves can’t grow properly. The problem with this is that plants need leaves for photosynthesis so that they can get energy. Also who wants to have a leafy vegetable like lettuce if the leaves aren’t healthy? So that’s why we need nitrogen.
The second element is Phosphorus which gives fruit growth and plant health. Plants won’t grow fruit, if they do, then the fruit will be unhealthy. If the fruit is unhealthy, we won’t get the nutrients when we need them. When plants are unhealthy they can’t produce seeds and just die on the ground.
The third element is potassium which gives root growth. The roots will stay small and won’t absorb water keeping the plant small. The root of the plant absorbs its nutrients and the water it needs. If the roots are too small, the plant will struggle to grow. Also this means the plant will produce small fruit.
We used special containers that had 2 compartments. We put some water in first, and then we put in some soil and then added the pills. Next we waited for 10 minutes until they dissolved. The soil results for soil PH is 6.5 slightly acid (N) Nitrogen is NO depleted (P) Phosphorus is PO depleted (K) Potassium K3 sufficient! Jack Room 25

Last week at Garden to Table Jodie taught us about soil and whether or not the soil is safe for the plants to grow in. We learnt about 3 elements NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium)
Nitrogen is first. It provides leaf growth for the plant. If the leaves don’t grow then the plant can’t photosynthesis. Photosynthesis gives the plant energy. Also who wants to eat leafy vegetables like lettuce if the leaves aren’t healthy?
The second element is phosphorus. A plant uses phosphorus for root growth; if there was no phosphorus the roots stay small and don’t absorb water making the plant small. The roots absorb water it needs. If the roots are too small the plant will struggle to grow. Also this means the plant will grow small fruit.
The third and final element is potassium. If there is no potassium the fruit will be unhealthy and it won’t give us the right nutrients we need from it. If it is unhealthy it won’t produce seeds and the plant will die.
We did tests to see if there was enough NPK in the soil. We did three tests. We used special containers with two compartments. We put water and dirt and a pill in the compartments then we shook them to find the results. The results for the soil PH test is 6.5 slight acidity (N) Nitrogen No depleted (P) Phosphorus Po depleted (K) Potassium K3 sufficient. THE END! Jack L. Room 25

Explanation about Seed Bombs

Seed bombs are small dried dirt bombs which help to protect seeds from harmful birds or other insects. Seed bombs are mainly made from dirt, however there is also coffee and seeds inside. You also have to have strong hands to turn the seed bomb into the shape which should be like a nice flat cookie shape. The bomb works by you getting as much soil and rubbing it together between your hands. The coffee beans should go in soon after. About five minutes of rubbing. An adult should put the seeds in because they might tip out fast and you might have too much or not enough. You are then meant to leave it to dry for a day. When it has been a day you can put them in your garden I think seed bombs are great for your garden and would be good enough for the seeds too because they wont be munched up by birds. They would have some protection. By Winona 

Explanation: A Windmill to Scare Birds

The windmill is supposed to scare birds away from your garden. It is better if you make it out of some sort of foldable plastic. You should put it in the way that the wind usually blows. If you put it in the way that the wind never blows, it wont work properly. It can be colourful plastic (optional). You will also need a screw for the top part. Another optional piece of the bird-scaring windmill could be a washer. Make sure the windmill has enough space to move because the plastic will just fall off the nail. By Jesse

I have enjoyed learning about all the different types of fruits, vegetables and herbs in garden to table. It has also been fun while cooking and most of the things we used were from our garden. I have enjoyed learning about the vegetables, fruits and herbs because most of the things that we were planting I didn’t even know existed. I recommend Garden to Table for Years Four and up because I think any child lower than that year might lose a finger while gardening or get burnt while cooking something hot. Zhaedyn

This year for Garden to Table I have learnt a lot of things such as washing a knife and learning about all sorts of vegetables and fruit. In the garden part we learnt to make seed bombs and many other wonderful things too. I have enjoyed making and trying all sorts of great creations. I have also enjoyed wheelbarrow races. I have enjoyed all these things because they are fun and a wonderful experience for me. I recommend you try Garden to Table because it’s a great way to enjoy cooking and gardening as well as it being a great opportunity for you. Winona

  1. Winona – I am very impressed by your writing. It is very informative. I am interested in how our seed bombs will work at school. Have you made any at home?
    Jesse – I have some troublesome birds at home. I am thinking of cutting down the tree that the birds are nesting in, but the plastic windmill could be a better solution. Thanks for writing about it.
    Zhaedyn – I agree that Year Four students should have a go. They will have a chance next term to learn about Garden to Table. What do you think was the hardest part to learn when you started doing Garden to Table at the beginning of the year?

  2. Wow! Room 25, really great to see what you’ve been up to for Garden to Table! Zhaedyn, the Year 3’s are going to do some gardening and cooking when Endeavour are at camp so I really hope no one loses a finger or gets burned- I am sure they will be just fine!

  3. These are really interesting posts. Who knew there was so much science to growing fruit and vegetables? This gives me some ideas as to how I might make my cabbages and broccoli heads bigger. I bet my kids would LOVE to have more vegetables on their dinner plates!
